Joy: Fireball

Bangladeshi film director and visual effects artist Raz Islam is currently producing a feature length superhero film together with a team of young emerging West Australian filmmakers.
Joy: Fireball will be filmed early next year around Perth. It incorporates aspects of culture and language from both Australia and Bangladesh.
The inspiration for the movie stems from Raz’s disappointment about the lack of contemporary superheros in his own culture;
‘I grew up reading lots of superhero comics such as Batman, Spiderman and Superman. But I was always disappointed that I didn't have a modern superhero that I could call my own – a Bangladeshi superhero. So I decided to create one.’
Nor are there any Australian film superheros.
Joy: Fireball is an opaque genre film parodying the codes and conventions of the Superhero genre. It is about an ordinary, young Bangladeshi guy who drives taxis in Perth. Joy gets picked on by the local Northbridge identities and wishes he could fight back.
Raz came to Australia in 2002 to study film and was attracted to the culture, people and landscapes.
‘The story of Joy: Fireball demands to be filmed in a country like Australia. Joy is an epic story that requires an epic landscape.’
Bangladesh has a population of approximately 150 million people. Many Australians think it is a part of India. Raz wants to use this film to help put the largely unnoticed Bangladesh in the spotlight.
The idea of this film is to introduce Bangladesh to Australians and the rest of the world. We not only play cricket but also we can make a superhero!
‘Joy: Fireball is a bridge between two countries to share our culture and knowledge.’

“Joy” is a small local Sci-fi project, being filmed around my hometown of Perth WA. I became involved through a friend who’s co-writing the film. I’ll be volunteering some of my time, designing and constructing a bunch of the “more interesting” props for the film. For now, I’ll be developing the unique weapons of “Joy”.

“Joy: Fireball is set in the dark and mysterious nights of an Australian city. It is a visually rich, epic journey of love and self-discovery.”

The project calls for a number of weapon props. Our main intent with all these objects is to get them looking aggressive and impressive on film. We also want to try to get them looking unique and unusual.
